Loudoun
Statement of Purpose
To preserve religious and personal freedom, to maintain the separation of church and state, and to counter the imposition through public policy of one religious tradition over others.

To carry out our purpose, Mainstream Loudoun educates voters about the true purpose and negative effects of the public policies promoted by religious/political right groups. We inform citizens how the goals and tactics of religious/political organizations affect our local communities, motivating them to become more involved in the electoral process and local government.

Mainstream believes

  • people who are religious, moral and pro-family can honestly differ on political and social issues.

  • we can improve our government and better our society without writing laws which infringe on our personal and religious freedoms and without abandoning church/state separation.

  • promoting tolerance and rational discourse will bring people together, improve our communities, and preserve our outstanding heritage of religious freedom .

Mainstream Loudoun opposes the political agenda of well-organized and well-funded religious/political right groups who

  • attempt to use our public institutions (schools, welfare, libraries) as a means to impose their religious views on all citizens.

  • promote laws and policies which threaten the personal and religious freedoms guaranteed by our Constitution.

  • imply that those who oppose their agenda are anti-family, immoral, or irreligious.

  • use benign-sounding programs as vehicles to achieve their ultimate goal (e.g. offering scholarships to a handful of inner-city students in order to gain public money for all religious school students).

  • employ divisive political processes ("stealth" candidates, hate-based messages, wedge issues, scare tactics).

Visit the quotes to see why the religious/political right's agenda is a threat to our Constitutional freedoms.
